Texas Tech completed its incredible run into the top of the College Football Playoff rankings with a decisive 34-7 win over BYU in the Big XII Championship Game at AT&T Stadium. The Red Raiders are currently ranked fourth in the CFP and are almost guaranteed to have a first-round bye.
Red Raiders head coach Joey McGuire couldn't hold back his tears in this post-game interview immediately after the final buzzer and spoke about the strength of his team.
“It’s incredible,” McGuire said. “I’ve said it all year long, our superpower on this team is how much we love each other. You look around at all this red? I’m so proud for us, I’m so proud for Red Raider Nation. It’s incredible, incredible.”

A season for the history books
Texas Tech set a record for wins this season with 12, besting the previous total of 11, which was done in 1953, 1973 and 2008. It's the Red Raiders' first Big XII football championship and first outright conference championship since 1955 when Texas Tech played in the Border Conference.
The Red Raiders held BYU to just seven points for the second time this season and picked up their 12th win of 20 points or more. They are the third team to accomplish that feat, joining the 2013 Florida State Seminoles and 2018 Alabama Crimson Tide. Both of those teams went on to play for a championship.
Who will Texas Tech play in the CFP?
If Texas Tech remains at No. 4, they would play the winner of the 5 vs. 12 game. Current predictions have Oregon as the fifth seed and the Ducks would host the 12th seed, which would likely be Tulane or James Madison. This matchup depends heavily on the results of the SEC, Big Ten and ACC Championship games.
Texas Tech could move up to the third or possibly second seed depending on the results of those games. Currently, it's Ohio State, Indiana and Georgia in the 1–3 seeds. Georgia plays Alabama this afternoon and a loss could possibly bump the Bulldogs out of the top four. Ohio State and Indiana play each other tonight and while it appears that both the Buckeyes and the Hoosiers are likely to stay in the top four, there could be some more movement.
It's almost a guarantee that the Red Raiders will be back at AT&T Stadium to play their CFP quarterfinal game on December 31 in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.
