Over the past few years, the Texas Tech football program hasn’t exactly been known for winning in the trenches. The Red Raiders have seen plenty of offensive success and put up plenty of points, but it’s not like folks have always expected incredible results from Texas Tech’s offensive line. It’s just not an area that the Red Raiders are known for.

But that could be changing.

To be completely fair, a lot of things have been changing in Lubbock in recent years. But specifically focusing on the way the roster has been constructed, it seems like there’s a new point of emphasis on winning at the line of scrimmage. Thus the massive overhaul through the transfer portal (for both sides of the ball).

But it looks like the Red Raiders might have a really solid offensive lineman that they’ve developed over the past few years in Lubbock. Sheridan Wilson is getting a bit of attention and Joey McGuire has pointed to Wilson as someone who has stepped up as a leader for Texas Tech.

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire points out Sheridan Wilson as “a leader” on the Red Raiders’ offensive line

“The guy that I probably haven’t talked about enough that I think has been the biggest improvement from last year to this year is Sheridan Wilson, our center,” McGuire said during a press conference.

Plenty of attention gets paid to the quarterback. Plenty of attention will get thrown towards wide receivers and running backs and tight ends. Nowhere near enough attention goes to the guys paving the path and keeping quarterbacks upright.

“He’s really taken ownership in that room, being a leader in that room,” Texas Tech’s head coach noted.

So it’s great to see McGuire note how Wilson has grown and improved, even if there is still improvement to be made.

“Overall as a football player, he’s gotten better and better,” McGuire explained. “I think you’ll see that on Saturday, but he’ll grow throughout the season and he’s going to have a really good year for us.”

That sounds great to me. I, for one, can get fully on board with seeing Texas Tech having a physically dominant offensive line that continues to improve as the season goes on.
