With Joey McGuire leading the Texas Tech Red Raiders, the program has come a long way. From 8-5 in his first season with a Texas Bowl win over Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels to 12-2 in 2025 with a Big 12 conference championship and a trip to the Orange Bowl to compete in the College Football Playoff. A lot has changed for the Red Raiders in just four seasons.
And that certainly includes the way that the Red Raiders go out and recruit (and the way that opposing teams have to try to recruit against the Texas Tech football program). Texas Tech’s 2025 season has given the Red Raiders significant ammo that the program really hasn’t had before.
That’s making a difference on the recruiting trail, according to Texas Tech’s head coach.
Winning the Big 12 has reshaped Texas Tech’s recruiting pitch and rival coaches probably aren’t all that thrilled about that
During a recent press conference, McGuire noted that this team is much different than what it once was because of the success that the Red Raiders have seen recently.
“If you negatively recruit Texas Tech, a lot of time it blows up in your face,” McGuire stated. “We hear that all the time of what somebody might say about us and then they’re like ‘coach, whatever they think this place is, they need to come out and visit.”
And while the facilities are going to be a popular topic of conversation, there’s a lot more to it than just that. There’s a proof of concept that is in play now thanks to how this past season played out for the Red Raiders.
“Whenever you start thinking about this building and the facilities, whenever you look at ‘well, Tech’s never won the conference,’ well, we won it this year,” McGuire said. “Going to the college football playoff and then what’s going to happen at the end of this month, the number of guys that are going to get drafted.”
All of that is going to help Texas Tech out in the long run as long as this program can keep feeding into that cycle. That’s a feedback loop that can continue to yield great results for McGuire and the Red Raiders if they let it. Winning will help get better recruits which allows McGuire and his coaching staff to continue to sell the program to the next generation.
