I, for one, am enjoying seeing this sort of recruiting success from Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. It’s great to see McGuire and his coaching staff continue to move across the Lone Star State, picking up talent from all parts of Texas, including the recent success over in East Texas and now the recruiting win over in Frisco.
On Wednesday, McGuire and Texas Tech were able to earn a commitment from one of the most talented defensive backs in the state as Donovan Webb announced that he intends to continue his college career by playing for the Red Raiders after he graduates from high school.
According to On3’s Industry Ranking, Webb is ranked as a four-star safety while 247 Sports has him as a highly rated 3-star. Webb ended up announcing his intention to play for Texas Tech over the likes of the Michigan Wolverines, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and others.

It’s also worth noting that Webb had scholarship offers from the Kansas State Wildcats, LSU Tigers, Colorado Buffaloes, Ohio State Buckeyes, Ole Miss Rebels, SMU Mustangs, USC Trojans, Texas A&M Aggies, Oregon Ducks, Oklahoma Sooners, Texas Longhorns, and so many more.
I personally think it’s great that Texas Tech was able to get past all of those schools.
With Webb on board, Texas Tech now has 16 players committed as part of the 2026 recruiting class. Interestingly enough, it’s pretty clear where McGuire’s recruiting priorities are right now. The Red Raiders have 13 players from the state of Texas committed at the moment as part of this class, which is exciting to see.
Also, there are 12 defensive players currently committed to Texas Tech (four defensive linemen, two linebackers, and now six defensive backs with Webb as part of this class).
