As the Texas Tech Red Raiders get set to take on the Oregon Ducks in the College Football Playoff, the Red Raiders will be bringing one of the most impressive offenses in all of college football to face off against one of the most robust defenses in the country.

Texas Tech, with Mack Leftwich as the architect for the Red Raiders’ offense this season, hasn’t really struggled in terms of scoring against just about everyone that it’s faced this season. Now, that’s not to say that Texas Tech’s offense has been perfect. There are some issues. Like in the redzone. But the Red Raiders are really effective at scoring points in general.

And that shows up when comparing Texas Tech’s offense to the rest of the country.

Where do the Texas Tech Red Raiders rank nationally in scoring offense ahead of the Orange Bowl vs. the Oregon Ducks?

Here’s what the top 10 teams in scoring offense looks like as we get closer to the Orange Bowl between the Red Raiders and the Ducks:

  • North Texas Mean Green - 45.1 points per game
  • Texas Tech Red Raiders - 42.5 points per game
  • Indiana Hoosiers - 41.9 points per game
  • Notre Dame Fighting Irish - 41.8 points per game
  • Utah Utes - 40.9 points per game
  • Tennessee Volunteers - 40.8 points per game
  • South Florida Bulls - 40.5 points per game
  • Vanderbilt Commodores - 39.4 points per game
  • Oregon Ducks - 39.2 points per game
  • Ole Miss Rebels 37.5 points per game

Stepping away from the College Football Playoff discourse for a second and noticing something here about the stats that will impact the Red Raiders and the rest of the Big 12 next season. It’s absolutely fascinating seeing the North Texas Mean Green at the top of these rankings knowing that Eric Morris left Denton, Texas and is now in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

I suspect that North Texas will still be really impressive on offense next year, but I think it’ll be worth watching and seeing how quickly the Oklahoma State Cowboys improve on offense next year. Morris did one heck of a job elevating the Mean Green.

Not that the Red Raiders won’t also be good next year, but it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on Stillwater and seeing how quickly they improve. With them getting better, BYU being impressive, and the Houston Cougars getting to 10 wins, there could be some very real competition across the board in the Big 12 next season.
