There is technically a chance that the Utah Utes could end up in the Big 12 championship game. And I really don’t want to get too much into that because it involves a lot of weird losses across the conference’s remaining games.
That’s pretty far from the most important and interesting elements of this matchup. What intrigues me about this game?
Well, Utah might have a shot at making the College Football Playoff. The Utes, statistically speaking, look like one of the best teams in the Big 12, sitting just behind the Texas Tech Red Raiders in a few categories. This is a team that, regardless of if it makes it to Arlington, has been incredibly dominant in its wins and has looked good throughout the season.
Utah has a lot to be proud of. And the Utes can’t let Kansas State spoil that any. The Wildcats are searching for a bowl berth and need a win to get to that point, but they’ve really improved lately. I’m sure Kansas State would love to get a bowl-securing upset win over one of the best teams in the country.

Should Texas Tech fans pay attention to Utah’s matchup with Kansas State? Why does this game matter?
Let’s take the sort of weird, nonsensical, apocalyptic circumstances that it would take for Utah to end up in the Big 12 championship game. Mostly because they make my head hurt. But also because Brad Crawford over at CBS Sports put that together for you to look at.
Why does this game matter for Texas tech fans beyond just Utah’s interests of making it to the Big 12 championship game?
Right now, Utah is considered one of the best teams in the country by ESPN’s Football Power Index (which isn’t the end all, be all, but it does matter some in terms of discourse) and the Utes lost at home to Texas Tech by 24 points. It would be great if that Red Raider win would continue to look as impressive as it did the day it happened.
