This weekend, the Texas Tech Red Raiders get to rest a bit. And while we won’t be able to see Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech football program face off against anyone, we will get to see a number of other different interesting matchups across the Big 12 this weekend.
Like the Kansas Jayhawks heading to Ames, Iowa in search of a win against the Iowa State Cyclones that would allow the KU football team to go bowling this season.
Iowa State, who is actually just barely bowl eligible at 6-4, would probably like to snag a win and help secure a solid season in the process. While the Cyclones haven’t achieved anywhere near what they wanted to, there’s still a path to an eight-win regular season up ahead of them and that would be solid.

Why should Texas Tech fans be interested in this game between struggling Big 12 teams?
The Red Raiders have a pretty clear path to getting to the Big 12 championship game and then also the College Football Playoff. All Texas Tech needs to do is win against a pretty underwhelming West Virginia team and then make it on to Arlington without any issue.
It’s not like either Iowa State or Kansas will end up in the Big 12 title game this year, they’re closer to the bottom of the Big 12 standings than they are to the top.
So, what’s the draw to this game?
Well, I mean, I tend to appreciate underdog programs and seeing closely contested games. And I think that’s what we could see here. As KU tries to make it to a bowl this season and Iowa State tries to polish this year up a bit, this matchup becomes incredibly important for the optics of both of those teams. I think it could be a close one. And that’s worth watching.
