While the Texas Tech Red Raiders return home to host an Oklahoma State Cowboys team coached by someone other than Mike Gundy (and also an Oklahoma State team that is just 1-6 on the season), a rivalry game is happening in the middle of the country.

The Kansas State Wildcats will be going to Lawrence, Kansas to meet up with the Kansas Jayhawks. And while this matchup doesn’t drastically change the landscape of the Big 12 championship race, it is worth keeping an eye on.

How does this game impact Texas Tech? Can Kansas vs. K-State impact Texas Tech’s Big 12 title aspirations this season?

This isn’t a game that could really shake things up for the Red Raiders unless Texas Tech somehow stumbles in the coming weeks.

And given what we saw on the road in Tempe, Arizona, I’m not willing to totally count that sort of possibility out right now. I don’t really expect that to have much of a chance of happening against any of the remaining teams on the schedule outside of against BYU, but it’s worth still keeping in mind.

Another thing to keep in mind here is how both Kansas and Kansas State are 2-2 in conference play right now. They’re behind Texas Tech, Arizona State, the Houston Cougars, as well as the BYU Cougars and Cincinnati Bearcats in the Big 12 standings. Neither the Jayhawks or the Wildcats have a great shot at competing for the conference title this season unless really weird things happen.

Texas Tech has already played against Kansas and the Jayhawks did challenge the Red Raiders for a half before TTU pulled away. If KU can get a convincing win over K-State, they’ll not only advance to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in Big 12 play, they will be able to show that Texas Tech’s win over the Jayhawks does carry a bit more weight to it.

Should Kansas State find a way to get a win over KU, then the Wildcats will hit .500 on the season overall at 4-4 and they’ll be 3-2 in Big 12 games. That would give Texas Tech a chance to get a decently respectable win next weekend when the Red Raiders play them then.

To be completely honest, as long as Texas Tech keeps winning, it really doesn’t matter too much who comes out on top of this game. Either possible outcome will keep the Red Raiders ahead of both the Jayhawks and the Wildcats. And Texas Tech still has a bit of control over its own destiny (though not total control) as long as the wins keep happening for the Red Raiders.

That said, given Texas Tech’s road stumbles last weekend and the fact that the Red Raiders haven’t had much success in Manhattan and also the fact that Joey McGuire will take TTU to Manhattan next weekend, I’d like it if the Jayhawks got a clean, simple win this week. Don’t give K-State momentum, please.
