With the way that Texas Tech has defined offense in the past couple decades or so, it shouldn’t be shocking that there are a number of Red Raiders who have managed to pull together single seasons where they had over 1000 receiving yards at a time.
I mean, we’re talking about the place where Mike Leach and the Air Raid thrived. Out in Lubbock, Texas, the Red Raiders were throwing the ball around a ton thanks to Leach’s offense. And that relationship really helped shape the way people talk about Texas Tech and also the way football is played at a number of levels.
But well before Leach was leading Texas Tech, there was a Red Raider who managed to be on the receiving end of enough passes for a season with 1000 receiving yards. Shoutout to Lloyd Hill, who before Leach was in Lubbock, was the only Red Raider to ever have 1000 receiving yards in a single season.
Texas Tech football history: Lloyd Hill made Red Raider history when he put together a 1000 yard receiving season
We’re talking about the guy who helped set the standard for receiving yards in a season without playing in a system like Leach’s. In 1992, Hill managed to catch 76 passes for 1261 yards and a dozen touchdowns.
That’s an impressive collection of numbers in any season, but it’s definitely even more impressive when you factor in that Hill did this with just 11 games.
Hill was consistent and served as a major threat in Texas Tech’s offense in 1992 as he averaged 16.6 yards per reception and 114.6 receiving yards per game. He managed to have seven games where he had at least 100 receiving yards, including a 222 yard performance vs. Wyoming, a 132 yard performance at Oregon, and a 151 yard performance vs. Texas.
