Looks like Lane Kiffin and LSU aren’t done trying to flip a Texas Tech 5-star commit

Okay, well, there’s no way to dance around this one. Anthony Sweeney (a 5-star edge prospect from Maryland who happens to be committed to play for Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech football team) might be interested in another program. Like, say, the LSU Tigers, for example.

Because it looks like Sweeney is en route to visit the folks in Baton Rouge.

Sweeney committed to join Texas Tech’s 2027 recruiting class back on April 13. When that happened, he decided to choose the Red Raiders over the LSU Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, Ohio State Buckeyes, and just about everyone else in the country. But there’s a lot of time between mid-April and signing day.

So it shouldn’t be too shocking that the Texas Tech football team would face some sort of fight for a player as talented as Sweeney.

Look, to be completely clear, I don’t think this is ideal.

I don’t know that anything is going to come of this, but I don’t think it’s a great thing that one of the highest-rated players in the 2027 recruiting cycle is interested in visiting another program other than the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Especially when you look at the fact that he is already committed to join Texas Tech in 2027.

But all of that said, there’s no real reason to spiral about this one. At least not yet. It’s incredibly common for players to travel around the country, take some visits, and check out high profile alternatives for where they’re committed. In some instances that could benefit McGuire and the Red Raiders.

In this particular case, it’s not ideal. But it’s not the end of the world just yet. For now. We’ll see soon enough, I’m sure.

For Texas Tech, this is just a fantastic reminder of how far the program has come over the years. We’re watching the Red Raiders enter very serious, high profile recruiting battles for 5-stars that have every possible opportunity in the world in front of them.

And in this particular case, Texas Tech is the one that already holds a commitment from Sweeney. The Red Raiders aren’t playing catch up here against a blue blood program. This is a case where Lane Kiffin is trying to rebuild his new program and he’s seeking out the best talent in the country in the process.
