There were a number of things that didn’t go well for the Texas Tech Lady Raiders in their matchup with the Iowa State Cyclones. We’re talking about an 84-70 loss, so clearly things weren’t working out in Texas Tech’s favor on Wednesday night.

And there are a number of angles to talk about that from.

Whether it’s the shooting percentage (where Iowa State hit 48 percent of its shots while Texas Tech only made 43 percent) or three point shooting (where the Cyclones drained 47 percent of their shots while the Lady Raiders made just 38 percent of theirs) or points in the paint (an area where Iowa State bullied Texas Tech and outscored the Lady Raiders 40-14), Iowa State just flat out looked better.

But one area that really prevented Texas Tech from building much momentum was fouls. And unfortunately for the Lady Raiders, one of their three leading scorers in this matchup ended up fouling out against Iowa State.

Bailey Maupin scored 16 points but fouled out as the Texas Tech Lady Raiders struggled with fouls in their 14-point loss to Iowa State

Against the Iowa State Cyclones, Bailey Maupin managed to score 16 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including 2-of-4 from three point range, and 6-of-10 from the free throw line. Maupin also grabbed five rebounds and recorded an assist.

In 27 minutes, that’s really impressive!

But the fact remains that Maupin’s time on the court was cut short because of foul trouble, something that eventually caught up to her as she fouled out of the game against the Cyclones. And in a game where Texas Tech couldn’t match up well with Iowa State’s frontcourt, that’s a problem.

The Lady Raiders certainly needed Maupin on the court and she just wasn’t able to due to foul troubles. She was scoring effectively while on the court, but that ultimately didn’t matter.

Of course, it wasn’t just Maupin who was haunted by foul troubles. Iowa State managed to win that battle as well as the Lady Raiders had 26 fouls while the Cyclones had just 19.
