Because the New York Jets are the New York Jets, it seems like everything that they do will generate some level of scrutiny and attention (and also a fair bit of judgement and outrage from somebody somewhere).
With the second pick of the 2026 NFL Draft, the New York Jets made the choice to pick up Texas Tech’s David Bailey, who is fresh off of a truly impressive season for the Red Raiders. During the 2025 season, Bailey managed to rack up 14.5 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss. He was a star who was a huge reason for Texas Tech’s 12-2 record.
And now, he’s got a shot to help the Jets a bit. It’ll be interesting to see how things shake out here, but the decision by the Jets to take Bailey is already generating plenty of discussion.
Here’s what NFL and college football media members are saying as David Bailey is headed to the New York Jets
Here’s what various different media members had to say about David Bailey getting picked up at No. 2 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft by the New York Jets.
David Bailey led Power 4 edge rushers with a 24% pressure rate and 25 QB hits. First step burst + a spin move. https://t.co/pvoLfNkUNT

Bailey tied for the FBS lead last season with 14.5 sacks and led all FBS players in 2025 with a 20.2% pressure rate when rushing the passer 💪

David Bailey becomes the 10th Red Raider all-time to be drafted in the first round and second highest behind Dave Parks (No. 1) in 1964. https://t.co/mJc9FwjLu8

Numbers and stats are always fun to look at. I, for one, think we should look at more of them. Because this sort of stuff isn’t just interesting, it’s helpful context to show just how impressive Bailey getting drafted this high is.
Arvell Reese has a higher ceiling — but the Jets priortized adding a player in David Bailey who has the ability to get 10 sacks the minute he puts on a Jets uniform.

Needs to improve against the run — and will be interested to see how the Jets use their edge rushers since Will… https://t.co/a151CDegsf
The Jets drafting David Bailey after canceling his Top 30 visit AND those comments yesterday makes zero sense.

No facility visit
Didn’t meet the staff
Doesn’t know the system

Of course, it sounds like fans and media members who keep a close eye on the New York Jets have a variety of opinions on this one.
Congratulations to former Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei and former #Stanford EDGE David Bailey on being selected out of #TexasTech by the @NYJets with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft: pic.twitter.com/dktsueZYRg

Texas really liked David Bailey, but they did not think he was going to be the No.2 pick in the draft. Not hardly.

Great eval by Tech.
And then there’s this helpful and healthy reminder that the Red Raiders absolutely made the right choice in going out and getting Bailey to come to Lubbock. Texas Tech made a great push to get him and it had a huge impact on this past season for them.
.@nyjets take edge phenom; David Bailey, from @TexasTechFB to help build this defense into an AFC Powerhouse...Jets need takeaways and splash defensive plays...exactly what Bailey has done in CFB with 10 Forced Fumbles #BaldysBreakdowns pic.twitter.com/1F9wpRO2us

We’ll see how this all plays out for the Jets and Bailey now that this pick has happened. For Bailey’s sake, here’s to hoping that he thrives and the Jets are able to fully support him all along the way.
