There’s no way that Texas Tech softball fans are going to forget about Mia Williams and Jackie Lis. There’s no way. These two have been such important and productive focal points of the Red Raiders lineup and they made that clear against the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Texas Tech’s Women’s College World Series opener on Thursday.
In the first inning of Texas Tech’s win over Mississippi State, Williams was able to get on base after getting hit by a pitch. Then, before the Bulldogs could even record an out, Lis followed that up with a home run to put the Red Raiders up 2-0 over Mississippi State.
No outs. First inning. First WCWS at-bat for Lis. A two-run homer that gave the Red Raiders an instant lead and control of this game. And Gerry Glasco was thrilled to see it play out that way.
‘Mia Williams getting on base, wearing it, she’s a magnet right now,” Glasco said in his postgame press conference after Texas Tech beat Mississippi State 8-0 in five innings. “I’m glad she found a way to get on base for Jackie Lis. And then for Jackie to step up in her very first World Series at-bat, just so calm always and then deliver a two-run home run.”
There’s not many better ways to get a game started than that.
Jackie Lis took advantage of her WCWS opener opportunity with a two-run shot vs Mississippi State
“That was just a huge moment for me,” Glasco mused. “And probably a huge moment for the small town girl.”
Lis was a central figure in Texas Tech’s win as she managed to go 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI against the Bulldogs.
This lineup is just so good from top to bottom. And that makes sense when you take a look at the stats as a whole. A .383 batting average across 65 games. A .719 slugging percentage as a team. The Red Raiders have managed to hit a combined 137 home runs throughout the season.
That’s a huge reason as to why they have a 58-7 win-loss record. It’s why they’re in the Women’s College World Series and in the winners’ bracket after Day 1 of the WCWS.
As for Lis and Williams, the two have combined to hit 45 home runs between the two of them. Lis has a .444 batting average while Williams has a .438 batting average. Having that as the one-two punch to start a game is just borderline unfair (for other teams) and it’s great for Glasco and the Red Raiders.
