Can the Texas Tech Red Raiders make it into the college football playoff this season? Will the Red Raiders be one of the top 12 teams in the country to have a shot at competing for a national championship this year?

I don’t know. I hope so! I think there’s a pretty dang good chance given the way Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders went about business throughout the offseason. But I don’t know for certain. The Big 12 is such a volatile, competitive, chaotic conference that it feels like there’s quite a few teams that could claim the conference crown this season.

And I suspect that Texas Tech is among those teams that will be fighting for top spot in the Big 12 this year.

But back to the original line of questioning: I don’t know.

Now, that said, there are a few college football experts over at CBS Sports who seem to believe that McGuire and the Red Raiders will make it into the College Football Playoff this season. And I think that’s a noteworthy thing to talk about.

4 CBS Sports college football experts believe Texas Tech has a real shot to make the College Football Playoff this season

Let’s start listing out who those guys are:

  • Chip Pattterson
  • Shehan Jeyarajah
  • Brad Crawford
  • Chris Hummer

Patterson put the Red Raiders in his projected field of 12 as the No. 11 seed. Which is better than not getting in at all, for what that’s worth. Meanwhile, both Jeyarajah and Hummer have the Texas Tech football team ranked as the No. 9 seed. Rounding out the bunch is Crawford, putting Texas Tech in at No. 8.

It’s early in the season and there’s plenty that can change between now and the back half of the year, but it’s fascinating to me to see this group have the Red Raiders in a somewhat close cluster in terms of how highly seeded they are.

And that’s probably fine. Again, getting in is better than not getting in. But ideally, it’d be great to see Texas Tech have a bit more notoriety and a higher seeding. That’s something that will need to be earned though and we’ll see if that happens.
