It is amazing how one game can change the perspective that many people have on a player. That's what's happening with Patrick Mahomes II after he played poorly in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday night.
As the Kansas City Chiefs were dismantled by the Philadelphia Eagles 40-22 in front of a record television audience, Mahomes had perhaps the worst game of his professional career. He threw for only 257 yards and two touchdowns while turning the ball over three times, including two crushing first-half interceptions.
In fact, it was in the first half of the Super Bowl when Mahomes struggled like never before on the biggest stage. He completed just six of 14 passes for 33 yards in the first half to have a passer rating of just 10.7. Had he finished with that passer rating, it would have been the fourth-worst by a QB in Super Bowl history.
Many people were thrilled to see Mahomes struggle. There is no denying that a huge section of football fans have grown tired of seeing Mahomes and the Chiefs win big.
What's more, thanks to his status as one of the most utilized pitch men in the country, Mahomes is unavoidable even when football isn't on the air. Therefore, the Mahomes fatigue is real.
However, the other side of the equation is that he is the best quarterback in the game. Those who still see him that way were quick to point out that Mahomes faced insurmountable challenges against the Eagles.
Despite the fact that Philadelphia blitzed zero times in Super Bowl LIX, they were able to generate tremendous pressure on Mahomes sacking him six times and hitting him eleven more times. No quarterback who has ever played the game would have been able to lead his team to a win under those circumstances.
Thus, a national debate is now raging among football fans. Did Super Bowl LIX prove that Mahomes was over rated or should the blowout loss be pinned on the players surrounding him?

How many would he have with subservient referees?

Probably one.
Mahomes is overrated and Sunday proved it.
What we learned last night is it's TIME to stop the over praise of the very human & normal QB Mahomes!
— J Andrews (@UPJ33) February 10, 2025
He's out of the Goat convo period!
That's as bad a QB performance in a Superbowl I've ever seen by a QB of that status.
He's good but NOT as GREAT as advertised!
Time to start talking about Patrick Mahomes potentially being overrated. He’s been statistically declining since teams decided to not let him beat em deep down the field.

I can’t believe the dumb takes on Mahomes and his career. He’s been to 5 super bowls. He had a bad game. That’s life. But many are judging his entire career on one game. This people are dopes and dumb and stupid

Kelce and Hopkins both had bad drops at bad times and Mahomes had maybe two seconds to throw the ball if he was lucky. Wasn't the best I've seen him perform by a long shot, but you can't pin that loss on him.

To his credit, on a night when he was at his worst, Patrick Mahomes talked for 12+ minutes and took every postgame question gracefully. Didn't shy away from anything. Took the blame for tonight, over and over again.

If Patrick Mahomes had Allstate instead of State Farm, maybe he'd be protected from mayhem like this pic.twitter.com/3S6phrRo8I

Patrick Mahomes in 8 seasons has 1 more Super Bowl win than the Eagles in 59 seasons. Know your place Eagles fans.

Mahomes adapted his play style & the Chiefs adapted their offense to adjust after losing the Super Bowl to the Bucs.
— Patrick Allen (@RPatrickAllen) February 11, 2025
That move won him an MVP and two more Super Bowls.
Folks freaking out after one loss about the offense that resulted in this run need their heads examined.
I’m no big chiefs fan. I like watching the chiefs but if they lose I’m over it pretty quick. But stop saying that Mahomes is overrated 😂!!! He’s been to 5 super bowls and won 3 of them. I understand if he was a 1 and and done but come on!!
