Gerry Glasco and the No. 1 Texas Tech Red Raiders (39-2 overall, 15-1 Big 12) are having some fun right now. The top-ranked Texas Tech softball team just went into Salt Lake City and cruised to an easy victory as the Red Raiders absolutely overwhelmed the Utah Utes (26-14-1 overall, 4-8-1 Big 12) in the weekend series opener.

The Red Raiders managed to get on the board early on and then took true control of the game by the time Texas Tech got into the third inning against the Utes. With an early score in the top of the first inning and then four more runs in the third inning, Texas Tech built a 5-0 lead over Utah early on.

With NiJaree Canady hitting a double, Kaitlyn Terry knocking an RBI single up the middle, Mia Williams hammering a two-run home run, and then Jackie Lis launching a solo shot of her own, the third inning sure was eventful for the Red Raiders.

In the circle, Canady managed to get through much of the game without any sort of issue. The Utes did get on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning via a two-run home run from Kennedy Proctor, but it wasn’t enough to really cause problems for the Red Raiders.

Canady managed to go 5.2 innings and allowed just four hits and two runs all while striking out seven opposing batters. Samantha Lincoln stepped in to close the game out by tossing 1.1 scoreless innings as she struck out a couple of batters.

Texas Tech continues to build upon its really solid avantage over the rest of the Big 12. With this win, the Red Raiders have a four-win advantage in conference play over the Arizona Wildcats, who are the second-best team in the conference at the moment.
