One of the last few unbeaten teams in the country is about to be in Lubbock, Texas, set to meet up with the No. 9 ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders. Fresh off of a bye week, the No. 8 ranked BYU Cougars are coming to town (right along with ESPN’s College GameDay crew).
This is an absolutely huge game. For both of these teams. For the Big 12. There’s some College Football Playoff implications at play here.
I mean, this game is a big deal.
The two top teams in the Big 12 (at least for right now) are set to face off in a regular season matchup (that could theoretically have a rematch in the Big 12 championship game) and they’re playing to take control of the conference championship race.

There are massive implications with this game. This is a legitimate battle for first place in the Big 12 as the Red Raiders and the Cougars try to secure a spot in the driver’s seat on the way to the Big 12 championship game.
The winner of this matchup will have complete control of its destiny down the stretch of the season. If Texas Tech loses to BYU, then the Red Raiders will need some help to get to Arlington due to that loss to Arizona State a few weeks back. Should BYU fall short against the Red Raiders, then the Cougars will absolutely need to make sure that they don’t slip up as the season winds down.
Right now, in the Big 12 standings, there are seven teams that are within 1.5 wins of first place. The conference race is incredibly tight. Wins are a must at this point.
