Another former Texas Tech Red Raider is about to become a head coach at a high profile program. Unfortunately for the Red Raiders, this particular program happens to be in the Big 12 and Eric Morris will be matched up against his alma mater on a somewhat regular basis moving forward.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys have decided to pick up the current North Texas Mean Green head coach (and also the former Texas Tech wide receiver and assistant coach) to be the next head coach in Stillwater.

And this is a huge hire for them.

Morris is a dynamic coach who has been a part of multiple great offenses at multiple levels in multiple roles. He’s also played a huge role in multiple rebuilds, such as his current work with the North Texas Mean Green, his prior work with the Washington State Cougars, and also his time at Incarnate Word leading the Cardinals.

Beyond playing for legendary head coach Mike Leach, Morris has so many connections to the Big 12 and is a great choice for the Cowboys (which is annoying for Texas Tech, if you ask me).

Morris has helped develop and coach Patrick Mahomes and Baker Mayfield while both of those quarterbacks were in Lubbock as Morris was an assistant on the Texas Tech coaching staff from 2013 to 2017.

He also worked for his former head coach during a stint at Washington State in 2012, helping Leach install the Air Raid with the Cougars.

Morris got his first head coaching gig by leading the Incarnate Word Cardinals from 2018 to 2021. When Morris left Incarnate Word to return to Washington State in 2022, GJ Kinne was hired to lead the Cardinals. Kinne decided to keep (and empower) now Texas Tech offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich.

It’s going to be fascinating to see the dynamics on the field (and in coaching circles) as Morris moves to a program where he can really make a significant splash on the national scale with the Cowboys.
