The Texas Tech Red Raiders have handled business against both the Oklahoma State Cowboys and the Kansas Jayhawks. This past weekend, Texas Tech handed Oklahoma State a 42-point shutout beating. A few weeks prior to that, the Red Raiders managed to hand Kansas a double digit loss as well.
So, this week, when Oklahoma Staet and Kansas meet up, it’s not going to be something that draws a lot of attention from folks in West Texas. And that’s understandable. But while this game directly doesn’t do a lot to drastically impact things for the Red Raiders, there is a chance that some things might happen involving at least one of these teams that involves a coaching hire.
And that could impact Texas Tech a bit. Maybe not directly, but maybe it happens indirectly.

Why should Texas Tech fans care about Oklahoma State and Kansas? Does this game impact the Big 12 championship race in any way?
There’s two questions there and there’s a few different ways to answer each of them.
Let’s start by answering the second one in the most direct way possible because it’s the easiest. No, the Oklahoma State vs. Kansas Jayhawks game will not impact Texas Tech’s chances of making it into the Big 12 championship game or the College Football Playoff.
Kansas is 2-3 in the Big 12 standings, which means they’re tied for ninth in the Big 12 standings right alongside the Baylor Bears and Iowa State Cyclones. Oklahoma State is in dead last, tied with the West Virginia Mountaineers at 0-5.
But Oklahoma State will need a new coach sooner rather than later. The Cowboys could benefit by picking up a forward thinking offensive coordinator who has ties to Texas. Oklahoma’s Ben Arbuckle fits that bill pretty well, but so does Mack Leftwich. I suspect Texas Tech will need to do all it can to keep him this offseason.
