Joey McGuire and his Texas Tech football team are heading into the 2025 college football season with one of the most talented teams in the state of Texas and in the Big 12. The Red Raiders brought in quite a haul through the transfer portal and their recruiting efforts have been thrilling to watch all throughout the offseason.
Now, as the upcoming college football season steadily gets closer and closer, it’s fair to think about just how far the Red Raiders could go this season.
If you ask Andy Staples, McGuire and the Texas Tech football team could certainly have a pretty fun season in 2025. There’s a lot to like about Tech’s chances in the always chaotic and always entertaining Big 12 and it looks like Staples is picking the Red Raiders to win the Big 12 and make it into the 2025 College Football Playoff.
Andy Staples gives Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders a real shot at making the 2025 College Football Playoff
Here’s where Staples has Tech making this coming season’s College Football Playoff 12-team bracket:
The 10 seed isn’t an awful spot to be. Things could certainly be better, but that’s not bad. And as Staples explains, it’s largely because the Red Raiders have a ton of talent.
“The Big 12 is the toughest league to predict, so I’m going with the team that spent this offseason to give itself one of the conference’s most talented rosters,” Staples writes. “Texas Tech upgraded all over the field, but if the spend made the secondary significantly better, then the Red Raiders should be quite formidable.”
I mean, that certainly seems to be a fair assessment of the situation in Lubbock heading into this season, if you ask me. Despite losing and being forced to replace a couple of coordinators, Tech should be fielding a team that is ready to compete amongst the best in the Big 12.
As for how the Red Raiders matchup with Georgia in Staples’ hypothetical CFP bracket? Well… Not so great. As you can see, Staples seems to believe that the Bulldogs will get the best of Tech and keep what is the Big 12’s only college football team from advancing on after the first round.
