There’s no doubt that Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech football team didn’t have much fun in their loss on the road against the Arizona State Sun Devils.
Losing this Big 12 matchup provided the Red Raiders with a bit of an unnecessary setback and the potential path to an appearance in the Big 12 championship game just got considerably more rocky for the Red Raiders.
Following the loss, in a postgame press conference, McGuire noted as much.
“You know, the big thing is our goal is to keep winning and earn our way into the Big 12 championship,” Texas Tech’s head coach said. “That doesn’t change anything with a loss today, it just makes it a little bit more difficult and we’ve got to fight our way back.”
Joey McGuire is right in saying that Texas Tech still has some Big 12 championship hopes, but things are more challenging now
And McGuire is right about this. Things are a bit more difficult. There really isn’t any room for error at this point. But, the possibility for the Red Raiders to get into the Big 12 championship game is still alive. That dream isn’t dead yet.
Following that loss to the Arizona State Sun Devils, the Red Raiders are currently in a three-way tie for third place in the Big 12 standings. Right now, Texas Tech is tied with Arizona State (who holds the tiebreaker with the Red Raiders) and the Houston Cougars (a team Texas Tech has already beaten).
One of those teams will drop out of the tie with Texas Tech this weekend as Houston and Arizona State face off in Tempe on Saturday night.
At the moment, the Cincinnati Bearcats and the BYU Cougars are both ahead of the Red Raiders, UH Cougars, and the Sun Devils. The Bearcats and BYU are tied for the top spot in the Big 12. And it’s worth keeping in mind that those two teams will play one another on November 22.
In addition to that, Texas Tech will get a crack at BYU as well when the Cougars head to Lubbock on November 8.
