Unfortunately, Patrick Mahomes II and the Kansas City Chiefs weren't able to make history on Sunday night. Coming up short in their bid for an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl victory, the Chiefs were humbled by the Philadelphia Eagles in a way that we have rarely seen since Mahomes took over as Kansas City's starting quarterback.
Of course, Mahomes was one of the stories of the night, but not in a good way. Playing behind an offensive line that was unable to give him any time to throw the football, he had one of the worst games of his career. Now, being sacked six times and hit 11 more played a huge role in his struggles.
After the game, though, Mahomes did what we would expect him to. He held his head high and remained a class act as he thanked his fans for their support.
"Appreciate all the love and support from #ChiefsKingdom," he posted on X. "I let y’all down today. I’ll always continue to work and try and learn and be better for it. Want to give thanks to God for every opportunity he has given me. We will be back."

The humble nature of these remarks and Mahomes' willingness to shoulder the blame for his team's shortcomings are what we would expect from a great leader. However, the blame for his team's awful showing shouldn't fall on his shoulders.
In the 40-22 loss, Mahomes never had a chance to be his usually brilliant self because his five-man offensive line couldn't block the four-man Philadelphia defensive line. It was almost an exact copy of Super Bowl LV when the Chiefs lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on another night when Mahomes was battered by an opposing defense that dominated his offensive line at the point of attack.
For the game, his stats were not horrid. He completed 21 of 32 passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns. However, almost all of those numbers came in garbage time after the game had been put on ice.
What was unusual was that Mahomes turned the ball over three times. While the first interception he threw, one that was returned for a TD to put the Chiefs in a 17-0 hole, was a truly awful decision by Mahomes, his second pick and the fumble he lost in the pocket were the result of Mahomes being hit as he tried to throw the football.
It was a reminder that even the best quarterback in the game can't always overcome the deficiencies of those playing beside him. What's more, in defeat, Mahomes reminded us that he is a class act all the way as he took upon himself a loss that was far from being his fault.
