As Brendan Sorsby and the Texas Tech Red Raiders continue their battle with the NCAA over the issue of the quarterback’s eligibility in the fallout of his gambling, there’s a number of folks who have been weighing in on the situation.
Understandably so as it’s one of the biggest stories of the offseason. Not just in college football, but really in all of sports.
So, it’s not shocking to see someone like Paul Finebaum take the opportunity to weigh in on the situation and at the same time take a shot at the NCAA, who seems to be deeply unpopular with just about everyone everywhere.
“I think he should have been suspended for a couple of games,” Finebaum said. “But to keep him out for the whole season? I think it’s wrong.”
Finebaum’s biggest issue here?

Paul Fineback takes a shot at the NCAA as he backs Texas Tech and Brendan Sorsby in their fight for eligibility
It really seems to be life he doesn’t think the NCAA is the sort of organization that has the right sort of moral standing to make this sort of decision against Sorsby. At least not to the degree that they’re punishing the Texas Tech quarterback.
“And while what he did on paper really is terrible, we’re talking about the NCAA, the most hypocritical organization in the history of mankind, coming down on somebody for gambling,” Finebaum continued. “They have their own side gambling deals and while gambling is pervasive everywhere.”
I suspect there’s a number of neutral parties out there that’d be willing to consider some of the merits of that argument. I don’t know that the NCAA might agree with that. Same for the folks who have really pushed this moment in our society that is in so many ways centered around gambling.
“So, two game suspension, perhaps, but keeping him out for the whole season is wrong,” Finebaum stated.
And I think Texas Tech football fans would be appreciative of that.
That would be Texas Tech’s season opener against the Abilene Christian Wildcats (unless the Texas Longhorns take Cody Campbell’s offer, that is) and a road game to play the Oregon State Beavers in week two. That would allow the Red Raiders to get Sorsby back ahead of their matchup with the Houston Cougars to start Big 12 play in week three of the season.
Which of course, that would be nice. I suspect Texas Tech would be able to get through the first few games of the season with just about anyone at quarterback, but getting Sorsby back ahead of a matchup with the Cougars would be greatly appreciated.
