Behren Morton is officially back as the starting quarterback for the Texas Tech football team as the Red Raiders have hit the road to Manhattan, Kansas to take on Chris Klieman and the Kansas State Wildcats this weekend.
And the offense in Lubbock hasn’t been perfect since Morton’s been sidelined with some injury issues as of late. Things have been bumpy in the past few weeks and Texas Tech’s vertical passing game has needed some help.
With Morton back in the starting lineup for the Red Raiders as he is now available and backup quarterback Will Hammond has been sidelined for the remainder of the season with an injury issue of his own, it sounds like Texas Tech offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich is looking forward to seeing how the Red Raider passing attack develops.
Behren Morton returning to start for Texas Tech has offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich hopeful about the passing game
On Monday, Morton’s return was a topic that came up a few times during the Texas Tech coaching press conference. When Leftwich had a chance to talk about Morton’s return, he noted that he’s hopeful that the starting quarterback for the Red Raiders will hit the ground running.
“You hope Behren gets back to playing like he was playing before, before his injury,” Leftwich said. “I think he’s been playing, he was playing at a really efficient level, completing a bunch of passes.”
And yeah, that’s accurate. The Red Raiders, with Morton healthy and starting for Texas Tech, had one of the best passing attacks in the Big 12.
“You look statistically, our explosive passes were really good when he’s been playing quarterback for us,” Leftwich continued. “So hopefully we can pick up where we left off.”
The Red Raiders would certainly benefit from having their starting quarterback fully healthy, ready for a road trip to Manhattan, and set to compete at a high level. We’ll see if that’s the case with Morton and if he can pick right back up where he left off.
