This week, the 2024 Paris Olympics kicked off. The games will run from July 24 to August 11 and Texas Tech fans will find a number of Red Raiders to follow.
This year, 16 current or former Red Raiders are participating in the Olympics. So let's take a look at those who are representing their countries after previously representing the Double T.
Ludvig Aberg headlines the group of Red Raiders participating in golf
Golf is one of the newest Olympic sports. Technically, the first Olympic golf tournament was held at the 1900 games.
However, the sport would not be part of the Olympics again until 2016. Thus, for today's fans, golf is still a relatively new Olympic event.
This year, three Texas Tech products are looking to bring home a medal in golf. Of course, one is Ludvig Aberg, the most prominent golfer to come from Texas Tech. The current PGA professional and two-time winner of the Ben Hogan Award as the best collegiate golfer in the nation, he is representing his home country of Sweden.
Many Red Raiders may also remember Mito Pereira who finished third in the 2022 PGA Championship after heading to the final hole of the tournament with a one-stroke lead. Now playing on the LIV Tour, he is in Paris representing the nation of Chile.
Meanwhile, representing Singapore is women's golfer, Shannon Tan. After playing only one year at Tech, she turned professional in January of this year.
Two Texas Tech products are playing soccer in Paris
It is no surprise to see the best Texas Tech women's soccer player of all time, Janine Beckie, in Paris. One of the leaders of the Canadian national team, she helped her home country capture gold in the Tokyo games three years ago and she currently plays for the Portland Thorns of the NWSL.
You will also find Victoria Esson on the pitch in Paris. A goalkeeper for New Zealand, she was a Red Raider in 2012-13.
Texas Tech will have plenty of representation in track and field
The other eleven Texas Tech products competing in Paris will all be partaking in the track and field events. Representing the U.S.A. will be women's hurdler Alaysha Johnson, men's sprinter Courtney Lindsay, and women's long-jumper Monae' Nichols.
Also competing in the women's long jump will be Ruth Usoro of Nigeria. In the women's triple jump, Ruta Lasmane of Latvia will be looking for gold. Meanwhile, Temitope Adeshina will be competing for Nigeria in the women's high jump.
In the men's hurdles, Tech will have two athletes competing. Antoine Andrews will be running the 110M hurdles for The Bahamas while Oskar Edlund will run the 400M hurdles for Sweden.
There are other Texas Tech sprinters who will also take to the track in Paris. On the women's side, Rosemary Chukwuma will run the 100M sprint and the 4X100M relay for Nigeria. Meanwhile, Andrew Hudson will run the 200M for Jamaica while Terrence Jones will run the 100M sprint for The Bahamas.
