In life, successful people often set goals for themselves. The same is true in sports as almost every team enters the season with a defined set of goals that they believe will lead them to a championship.

For instance, one goal that the Red Raiders have on defense is to secure three takeaways per game. That's a lofty aspiration and one that Tech didn't come close to reaching in 2023.

Other goals involve luck. For instance, one of the goals in 2024 is to simply have a healthy quarterback for the entire season. That hasn't happened for the Red Raiders since 2017.

So let's take a look at some goals the entire team should be striving toward this fall. And we will begin with an area where the Red Raiders have struggled under Joey McGuire.

Texas Tech must strive for a 5-0 start

If this team is going to be a Big 12 contender, then a fast start is imperative. However, in the two years of the McGuire era, Tech has not been a program that has started well.

In fact, the Red Raiders are just 5-5 overall in the first five games of the last two seasons. That has to change in 2024.

This season's schedule sets up well for a fast start. In fact, there is no reason that this team shouldn't be 5-0 to open the year.

In the first five games, Tech plays an FCS team, a depleted Washington State team that suffered massive defections from last season, a group of five team, North Texas, at home, and two of the worst Big 12 programs from 2023, Arizona State and Cincinnati.

If Tech can jump out to a 5-0 record, it could set up a massive showdown on the road at Arizona in week six. But to make that game with the Wildcats mean something, Tech has to be perfect in the season's first five games.
