Darrion Williams became Texas Tech's best all-around player

Across the board, sophomore Darrion Williams became Texas Tech's best all-around player in 2023-24. That growth was evident when looking at his numbers.

As a true freshman at Nevada, he averaged 7.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. With the Red Raiders this past season, he put up 11.4 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists.

All of that improvement came while is strength of schedule rose from 6.41 to 9.28. That's why Texas Tech was so thrilled with Williams' development.

It was a bit of a slow burn though. From November 8, 2023, to February 3, 2024, he averaged only 8.9 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.

However, from February 6, 2024, to the end of the season, the final 12 games of the year, he put up 15.8 points and 8.6 boards per outing. That was while Texas Tech was making a push to the NCAA Tournament and while the Red Raiders were playing without 7-footer Warren Washington for most of that span.

Over those 12 games, Williams scored in double digits in every game except the BYU game in the Big 12 quarterfinals in which he sprained his ankle. That's incredible efficiency and effectiveness during the most important portion of the season.

Williams went from being a nice role player when he arrived to being Tech's most indispensable piece as the season hit its crescendo. That is the type of improvement that every program would want to see out of a transfer in his first year.
