Tyler Owens

Defensive Back

Washington Commanders

Undrafted Free Agent

Tyler Owens is a physical freak. Everyone involved with the Texas Tech football program has said so. However, the safety never had the productivity on the field to match his athletic gifts.

Coming out of high school in the class of 2019, he was considered by 247Sports to be a 5-star recruit. He signed with Texas but never made an impact in Austin so he transferred to Tech in 2022.

As a Red Raider, Owens was decent but he never lived up to the expectations that accompanied him throughout his college career. His best season, 2023, saw him make 37 tackles with one going for loss.

Owens could have been drafted just based on his physical gifts alone. In fact, his athleticism earned him an invite to the NFL Scouting Combine in February but there, an injury prevented him from running the 40-yard dash, and because he couldn't show off his elite speed, he is now headed to Washington to be an undrafted free agent with the Commanders.

If Owens can stay healthy and showcase his raw athletic skills, he could make the roster because he could be a real special teams weapon. So keep on eye on him as he battles for a spot in the NFL because you can't coach the type of physical gifts that he has.
