It's amazing how much can change in a week. Heading into the 2024 season, most Texas Tech fans considered the week-two game at Washington State one that the Red Raiders should win.

Now, though, after watching the Red Raiders struggle to beat FCS opponent Abilene Christian 52-51 in overtime on Saturday night, it is safe to say that a huge portion of the fan base is preparing for the worst in Pullman, Washington this weekend.

The main reason that Tech fans have grown pessimistic this week is because Tech's greatest weakness in week one, the secondary, will have to go up against Washington State's greatest strength, their passing attack. In their week-one victory over Portland State (also an FCS program) the Cougars threw for 413 yards on just 17-24 passing in a 70-30 win. That's an average of 24.2 yards per completion.

Also, the Red Raiders have been woeful on the road in the two years of the Joey McGuire era going just 3-8 in opposing team's stadiums since the start of the 2022 season. Thus, the task facing the Red Raiders on Saturday night appears much more daunting than it might have just a week ago.

Still, Red Raider fans will be tuned in to see how it all unfolds. Therefore, let's take a look at the broadcast info, weather forecast, series history, and game notes for this intriguing matchup.

Texas Tech vs. Washington State game notes

All game notes provided by TexasTech.com

  • Texas Tech last traveled to the state of Washington in 1982 for the return of a home-and-home
series with Washington. The top-ranked Huskies edged the Red Raiders, 10-3, in front of 57,500 fans off Lake Washington in a rare midseason non-conference game set for Oct. 24 that season.
  • There is likely no greater connection between Texas Tech and Washington State than each of its former head coach, Mike Leach. The late Leach turned both programs into constant winners as he is Texas Tech’s all-time winningest coach after leading the Red Raiders to 84 victories and 10 bowl appearances from 2000-09. He later rebuilt Washington State, guiding the Cougars to 55 wins over eight seasons, third-most in program history. Leach compiled a 158-107 record over his career, leading his teams to 19 bowl games with 16 of those coming between his time at both Texas Tech (10) and Washington State (6).
  • Leach will be inducted into the Washington State Hall of Fame this weekend, only a year after he entered the Texas Tech Hall of Honor. He was inducted as part of the 2023 class alongside his first prominent quarterback of his head coaching career in Kliff Kingsbury.
  • The trip to Washington State will be a return for two Red Raiders, OLB Sam Carrell and WR Josh Kelly. Carrell saw limited action in his one season in Pullman in 2021 while Kelly had a
breakout year with the Cougars in 2023 in his one season. Kelly caught 61 passes for 923 yards and eight touchdowns to lead the Cougars in both categories, aiding a program that ranked fourth nationally in passing. Prior to Kelly’s season at WSU, he began his career at his hometown university, Fresno State.
  • Texas Tech offensive line coach Clay McGuire returned to his alma mater this offseason after completing his second stint as an assistant at Washington State. McGuire spent a total of eight seasons with the Cougars, first under the late Mike Leach from 2012-17 and then again under Jake Dickert from 2022-23.
  • Texas Tech fans will have to stay up late for Saturday night’s kick, which is scheduled for 9 p.m. CT in Lubbock. It will be only the seventh time in program history that the Red Raiders have kicked off at 9 p.m. CT or later as Texas Tech is 3-3 all-time in those games.
