Big 12 play has arrived for the Texas Tech football team. That means we will start to get three official injury updates per week during conference play.
Tuesday, the first of this week's updates was released, and several key Texas Tech starters are listed. That's not what Red Raider fans wanted to see.
Corner Amier Boyd is listed as "Out" for the game. He had started both of the first two contests of the season, so that is a significant loss. However, it must be noted that on the official Texas Tech week-three depth chart, he had fallen behind Davin Martin as the first-team corner opposite Bryce Pollock. Whether or not the unspecified injury is the reason for that change, only those inside the program know.
Meanwhile, four potential starters are deemed "Questionable". Most surprising among that group is wide receiver Kenny Johnson, who didn't suffer a noticeable injury in the Oregon State game.

This year, Johnson is tops on the team with 117 receiving yards and second in receptions with nine. Hopefully, he will be able to give it a go against Houston, as the Cougars have a pair of standout corners, meaning that Tech will need its best pass catchers in action on Friday night.
Another important offensive weapon listed as "Questionable" is tight end Terrance Carter Jr. Without question the biggest matchup nightmare Texas Tech has at its disposal, the senior missed the Oregon State game with a foot or ankle injury, as he was seen in a walking boot at the game.
A pair of defensive starters are also listed as "Questionable". Safety Brenden Jordan is expected to return to the field after serving a team-imposed two-game suspension to open the year. Whether he is dealing with an injury or just working his way back into game shape, we don't know, but he's on the injury report.
Meanwhile, transfer edge rusher Trey White is also on the injury list. He's yet to make his season debut after transferring to Lubbock from San Diego State this offseason.
A knee injury sustained in fall camp has held him out of the first two games of the season. Now, Tech hopes he can return to help a pass rush that struggled against Oregon State. Earlier this week, head coach Joey McGuire said that White, who has 19.5 career sacks at the collegiate level, is a game-time decision.
How teams handle the injury report varies. Some don't take it seriously and list only players who aren't expected to play major roles, regardless of their health.
Tech has been rather forthcoming since this policy was implemented. What's been interesting, though, is that the meaning of what is "Doubtful" or "Questionable" is open to each team's interpretation.
Last season, most of the players listed as "Questionable" by McGure's program ended up playing that week. Hopefully, that will continue on Friday night because the Red Raiders will need all hands on deck in this key Big 12 showdown.
