Time and time again, all throughout the season, the Texas Tech Red Raider defense managed to shut down opposing offenses in really impressive ways. Time and time again, the Texas Tech Red Raiders had a stunning outing from their defense, which ranks among the best in the country in numerous categories. Time and time again, Shiel Wood and the Red Raider defense delivered.
And that certainly was the case on Saturday as the Texas Tech football team closed out the regular season by pummeling the West Virginia Mountaineers in Morgantown, West Virginia.
The hiring of Wood, being able to poach him away from Willie Fritz and the Houston Cougars, sure looks like it will go down as one of the most impactful decisions in the entire history of the Texas Tech Red Raider football program. Because he elevated one of the worst defenses in the country and turned it into one of the best.
It’s truly remarkable.
Texas Tech’s defense smothered the West Virginia offense as the Red Raiders secured an incredible shutout win on the road on Saturday
Against the West Virginia Mountaineers, the Red Raiders defense secured another shutout and managed to hold WVU’s offense to just 180 total yards. Also, West Virginia had possession of the ball for just 20 minutes.
That last stat there in and of itself is pretty impressive given the way Texas Tech forced the Mountaineers into multiple three and outs. And even if it wasn’t a three-and-out situation for West Virginia, Texas Tech still halted WVU on just about every third down. The Mountaineers converted just 2-of-13 third downs against the Red Raiders in this game.
Brice Pollock and Amier Boyd each managed to snag an interception against West Virginia’s passing game while Romello Height, E’Maurion Banks, and Jayden Cofield routinely got pressure on the Mountaineers quarterback.
Folks, Wood being hired this season really elevated what the Red Raiders were capable of. And that is absolutely something to be grateful for.
