Though the Texas Tech transfer portal party has slowed down, a new name has surfaced as a target for the Red Raiders. It is being reported by several sources including Hayes Fawcett of On3 Sports that Penn State wide receiver Omari Evans is set to visit Texas Tech in the upcoming days along with Tennessee, Washington, and Syracuse.
This year, Evans was a key component of the Penn State offense. As a junior, he hauled in 21 passes for 458 yards and five TDs. That was good for an impressive average of 19.8 yards per catch.
Though the Nittany Lions' passing game largely revolved around the nation's top tight end, Tyler Warren, who caught 104 passes for 1,233 yards and eight touchdowns, Evans was still an important piece for Penn State this year. He was the team's second-leading receiver among wideouts and he was a big-play threat who led the team in yards per reception.
2024 was the best season yet for the 6-foot, 190-pounder. In his previous two college seasons, he managed to catch a total of just nine passes for 149 yards and two scores.
Many Red Raiders fans might be wondering why the program is interested in Evans, though. That's because the program is in great shape at the receiver spot.
Next season, Caleb Douglas and Coy Eakin are set to return after finishing second and third respectively on the team in catches and yards this fall. That duo combined for 109 receptions for 1,529 yards and 13 touchdowns and each posted numbers that far exceeded what Evans ever did in Happy Valley.
Also, the program has already signed transfer wide receiver Reggie Virgil from Miami (OH). In 2024 he caught 41 passes for 816 yards and nine touchdowns making him one of the top prizes in this offseason's portal frenzy.
Thus, it is fair to wonder just how many passes there will be to feed all the hungry wide receivers the Red Raiders will have on the roster in 2025. Given that Evans has only played in a run-heavy offense where he wasn't featured a ton, might he want to play for a team that can guarantee him more opportunities than Texas Tech likely can next season?
However, we have learned this offseason that if the Red Raiders really want to land a specific player from the portal, they will make it happen thanks to the vast financial resources the program is dedicating to talent acquisition. That could entice a player like Evans to call Lubbock home. So keep an eye on news about Evans in the next few days because he is a player being linked to Texas Tech and he should become a Red Raider, he could give Tech one of the deepest wide receiver rooms in the country this fall.
