Texas Tech’s 1964 Sun Bowl vs Georgia was a low scoring dud for the Red Raiders

The Texas Tech Red Raiders had a pretty solid offense back in 1964, according to the folks documenting the history of the Sun Bowl. At least that was true for the time, that is. Back during that 1964 season, Texas Tech was apparently producing nearly 300 total yards of offense per game. And that was apparently good enough to produce the No. 1 offense in the Southwest Conference.

Nowadays, that offense wouldn’t be that great. Back then though? Phenomenal stuff. It’s pretty crazy how the game has changed a bit over time.

It’s also absolutely crazy how, despite having a truly potent offense (relative to the time and era and all that jazz), Texas Tech was unable to score a single point against the Georgia Bulldogs when the two teams met up in the Sun Bowl.

Maybe the Red Raiders are cursed and doomed to always struggle when playing in this particular bowl game? I mean, at this particular point in time, we’re now talking about FIVE losses and just one win for the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech football history: The Red Raiders lost yet another Sun Bowl, this time in 1964 vs. the Georgia Bulldogs

Both of these teams entered with identical 6-3-1 records. Both of these teams struggled on the offensive side of things. Unfortunately for the Red Raiders, Vince Dooley would lead the Bulldogs to a 7-0 victory over the Red Raiders.

As the folks over at the Sun Bowl pointed out, Dooley’s Bulldogs were able to get that 7-0 win because the Bulldogs took advantage of a 52-yard pass which set up a touchdown AND the Red Raiders were held out of scoring distance for much of this game. The Red Raiders apparently didn’t even get into Georgia’s half of the field until the fourth quarter.

I really, truly believe Texas Tech should just flat out refuse to play in the Sun Bowl should the opportunity ever present itself at some point in the future. It’s just not good to the Red Raiders.
