The Texas Tech football program is serious about fixing its secondary. After already adding four defensive backs through the transfer portal, the program added another on Wednesday.
Tarrion Grant, who played for Purdue as a true freshman in 2024, has committed to the Red Raiders according to Hayes Fawcett of On3 Sports and other outlets on social media. This continues the program's unprecedented hot streak in the portal.
But unlike many of the other players Tech has brought into the mix via the portal, Grant appears to be a long-term solution for the program. That's because he's still developing as a player.
This season, he was credited with 13 tackles, two pass defenses, and a forced fumble for Purdue. While those numbers are not going to jump off the screen at anyone, there is massive potential for Grant given his pedigree.
As a high school product, Grant was rated a 5-star player in the class of 2025 but when he moved into the class of 2024 to graduate early, he was dropped to a 4-star recruit. Even so, he remained the No. 157 overall player and the No. 17 corner in the nation according to 247Sports.com.
What Grant has in common with the other corners that Tech has signed during this portal cycle is that he has excellent size. At 6-foot-2, 197 pounds, the South Carolina native continues to show that new Texas Tech defensive coordinator Shiel Wood values length at the corner position.
Tech has also added corners Dontae Balfour from Charlotte, who is 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, Brice Pollock from Mississippi State, who is 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, and Amier Boyd-Matthews of UTEP who checks in at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds. Now, Grant is also bringing length to the Red Raider secondary as Joey McGuire and Co. continue their massive offseason overhaul of the defense.
