The first batch of Top 25 college football rankings from the College Football Playoff Committee are out and Texas Tech has earned itself a spot amongst the 12 best teams in the country, which matters a heck of a lot right now.

As the season winds down, and as Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders try to lock up a spot in the College Football Playoff this season, getting ranked at No. 8 is a good thing to have happen. Every bit of recognition matters as Texas Tech does everything possible to try to earn a shot at competing for a national championship this season.

Texas Tech earns No. 8 spot overall in College Football Playoff ranking as the Red Raiders are one of three Big 12 teams ranked

Right now, the Red Raiders are sitting at No. 8 overall, ahead of the likes of the Oregon Ducks, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Texas Longhorns, and Oklahoma Sooners. But, well, the BYU Cougars happen to be right above Texas Tech right now.

Here are the three Big 12 teams to snag a spot in the first batch of the 2025 College Football Playoff Top 25 rankings:

  • BYU Cougars - No. 7 overall
  • Texas Tech Red Raiders - No. 8 overall
  • Utah Utes - No. 13 overall

Had the Houston Cougars not lost to the West Virginia Mountaineers by 10 points at home, we’d probably be seeing them ranked in this grouping. Had the Cincinnati Bearcats not lost to the Utes in such remarkable fashion, we’d probably see them ranked here.

But right now, it’s just BYU, Texas Tech, and Utah. Which seems right for this conference right now. BYU and Texas Tech are both ranked above the Utes because both the Cougars and the Red Raiders beat Utah. And now this weekend, we’ll get to see the two top teams in the Big 12 meet up.
