The Texas Tech baseball team has a brand new pitching coach. That’s right, after reports broke that Tim Tadlock and the Texas Tech Red Raiders would be adding a brand new coach to the TTU baseball coaching staff following a disappointing season, Tech officially confirmed the hiring on Tuesday.
Tadlock and the Red Raiders are bringing Steve Foster to town. If you’re not familiar with Foster, that’s totally fine. If you are, it’s likely because you also keep up with Major League Baseball. For the folks who don’t know, Foster has spent quite a bit of time helping pitchers at baseball’s highest level. Most recently, Foster has served the Colorado Rockies as their Director of Pitching.
And while he’s held on to that cool title from 2021 to 2025, prior to that, Foster was known as the Rockies’ pitching coach (a role he served in from 2015 to 2021). Along with that, Foster has also spent some time specifically focused on bullpens.
From 2007 through 2009, Foster helped out as the bullpen coach for the Miami Marlins. After that, he took the same role and helped out the Kansas City Royals from 2010 to 2012.
And now he’s officially on his way to Lubbock, as confirmed by the Texas Tech athletics department putting out a nice, fancy press release for everyone to read.
Texas Tech confirms that Steve Foster will serve Red Raiders as pitching coach
From what I can tell, Kendall Rogers of D1 Baseball actually had this story rolling at some point last week (the man is well connected in the college baseball world).
SCOOP: @TTU_Baseball is hiring Steve Foster as its new pitching coach, I'm told. Foster has quite the resume as he heads to Lubbock. He spent seven seasons as the big league pitching coach for the @Rockies + three more as the Director of Pitching Development for the org. #Wreckem… pic.twitter.com/b8IEPetoBC

It’ll be interesting to see what Texas Tech’s pitchers look like this coming season. Hopefully it’s a good bit better than what we saw out in Lubbock in 2024 and 2025. The Red Raiders were abysmal on the mound in 2024 as they combined to put together a horrifying 6.19 ERA through 510.1 innings pitched. The Red Raiders also gave up 87 home runs in 2024.
And unfortunately, 2025 wasn’t all that spectacular either. The Red Raiders struggled on the mound once more, posting a 6.49 ERA to go with the 74 home runs allowed. Folks, that ain’t great! Here’s to hoping that Foster can do better.
