One of the top recruits in the nation and the son of a former NBA star is on the Texas Tech basketball program's radar. Reese Alston, son of 11-year NBA veteran Rafer Alston, is hearing from the Red Raiders, along with other Big 12 and regional programs.
According to a post on X by Jamie Shaw of On3 Sports, the Houston product is hearing from Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Central Florida, Houston, and Stanford, among others. The class of 2027 recruit is rated a 4-star player by 247Sports.
That site ranks him the No. 40 overall player and No. 8 point guard in America. He is also the No. 5 player in Texas in his class.
However, he has no major conference offers outside of the teams mentioned above (though that might change at any time). His other offers are from the likes of Manhattan, Nevada, Sam Houston, UT-Arlington, UTSA, Wichita State, and a few more.
Many fans of a certain age remember Rafer Alston quite fondly. As an NBA player, he averaged 10.1 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game while playing for five different franchises.
However, he might be best known for his streetball career. Known by the nickname "Skip 2 My Lou", he was one of the first streetball players to become a basketball star on underground mix tapes that were distributed in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Now, in a development that makes fans who enjoyed that era of basketball media feel rather old, his son is a top college basketball prospect. And it appears that Texas Tech is in the hunt to land him.
According to MaxPreps, the younger Alston averaged 21.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game as a sophomore for Second Baptist High School in 2024-25. Perhaps one day he will bring his game to Lubbock, where a new generation of fans might learn about his father's legendary underground basketball exploits.
