We’re closing in on the Orange Bowl and we’re about to see just how good the Texas Tech Red Raiders can be when facing one of the toughest teams in the country. Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders, matched up with Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks, have an opportunity to demonstrate that they truly are an elite team this season.
And there’s plenty of reasons to believe that Texas Tech is an impressive team. We’ve seen it, but not everybody has been paying attention to what the Red Raiders have done this season.
So let’s take a look at the stats and see how Texas Tech stacks up amongst the top offenses in the country.
Where do the Texas Tech Red Raiders rank nationally in total offense ahead of the Orange Bowl vs. the Oregon Ducks?
Here’s where the Red Raiders sit right now when it comes to total offense:
- North Texas Mean Green - 512.4 yards per game
- Ole Miss Rebels - 498 yards per game
- South Florida Bulls - 488.7 yards per game
- Tennessee Volunteers - 482 yards per game
- Texas Tech Red Raiders - 480.3 yards per game
- Utah Utes - 478.6 yards per game
- Texas State Bobcats - 475.8 yards per game
- Indiana Hoosiers - 472.8 yards per game
- Florida State Seminoles - 472.1 yards per game
- USC Trojans - 471.6 yards per game
This isn’t exactly the best way to evaluate how effective a team is on offense, but it’s certainly still worth pointing out that the Red Raiders have been extremely effective at moving the ball up and down the field this season.
There are certainly some flaws in Texas Tech’s offense, but the fact remains that the Red Raiders, when operating within Mack Leftwich’s veer-and-shoot offense, are able to produce one of the most effective offenses in the country in terms of generating yards against teams.
We’ll see how Texas Tech does against Oregon’s defense. The Red Raiders haven’t really faced many opposing defenses that are as robust as what the Ducks’ bring to the table. It’s going to be a good test for Texas Tech’s offense and what the Red Raiders are fully capable of.
