The ending may have been bitter and ugly with the way that things wrapped up in the College Football Playoff down in Miami against the Oregon Ducks, but so much of the 2025 college football season was so good for Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
The Red Raiders managed to go 12-2, win the Big 12 championship for the first time in program history, and make it to the College Football Playoff. Plus, you know, the defense was fun to watch all throughout the season while the offense was pretty dang good (the Orange Bowl against Oregon not included).
Having a good defense is just not something that happens all that often for the Texas Tech football team, so this season was all sorts of special.
Because of all of that success that Texas Tech experienced throughout the season (and all of the wins that the Red Raiders accumulated by tearing through the Big 12), Texas Tech will end the season with a pretty impressive ranking from the AP Poll Top 25.
Texas Tech sits at No. 7 in the final AP Top 25 college football rankings of the 2025-2026 college football season

Again, the season was far from perfect for the Red Raiders, but it was still among the most memorable in program history. And it sets an incredible foundation to continue to build upon.
It’s going to be interesting to see how Texas Tech continues to build for the future of this program. There’s a ton of talent all over the place in Lubbock and the Red Raiders are still thriving in the transfer portal. It’s unlikely that this program is going away.
