Across a couple of trips to play in Louisiana and in College Station, the Texas Tech Red Raiders softball team has picked up right where it left off. Texas Tech was able to play six games against a few different opponents and the Red Raiders cruised to six straight wins to get the season rolling.
That’s exactly what Texas Tech softball fans will want to see from the Red Raiders at the start of this season.
In the six games that the Red Raiders got to play to start this season, Texas Tech was able to secure five run rule wins and a win over a top 15 opponent on the road. I mean, we’re talking about Texas Tech averaging 10.7 runs per game to get this season going.
That’s good! And after the Red Raiders finished last season as the runner up in the Women’s College World Series, a handful of truly dominant victories and then road win over the No. 11 Texas A&M Aggies are good things to see.
Texas Tech softball begins title pursuit as the Red Raiders score 64 runs in just six games to start the 2026 season
Mia Williams certainly helped lead the way for the Red Raiders as she has hit three home runs so far this season (currently giving her the most on Texas Tech’s roster through six games), but she wasn’t the only home run hitter over the past few days. Taylor Pannell and Lagi Quiroga also managed to hit a couple of home runs each.
And it’s certainly worth pointing out that all three of those players arrived at Texas Tech via the transfer portal. Texas Tech needed some additional firepower and the Red Raiders went out and got it. To be extremely clear and specific, combining all of that firepower at the plate with pitching like what Texas Tech already had via NiJaree Canady has already paid off huge for the Red Raiders.
Take the recent win over the Aggies, for example. In the 3-2 win over the No. 11 ranked Texas A&M, Williams played a huge role as she hit a home run in the first inning and then later had an RBI double that gave Texas Tech its 3-2 victory. And then there’s the run rule wins over the likes of Bryant, Providence, Louisiana-Monroe, North Texas, and McNeese State.
The Red Raiders look really, really good, which is really, really exciting to see. Especially after last season set a new standard for what excellence looks like from the Texas Tech softball program.
