Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders are having to rebuild a little bit of respect after losing their first game of the season when they went to Tempe, Arizona and came up short against the Arizona State Sun Devils.
And though the Red Raider football team did everything it was supposed to this past weekend, the computers behind the ESPN Football Power Index college football rankings are still not sold that Texas Tech might be among the best teams in the country.
Texas Tech happened to beat Oklahoma State by 42 points in a shutout and the Red Raiders dropped a couple spots in the rankings. Which, you know, stinks. But it is what it is. The FPI rankings don’t tell the full story of the season and they won’t be what determines if the Red Raiders can get a shot at the College Football Playoff this season.
ESPN FPI top 25 college football rankings, Week 10: Texas Tech drops to No. 14 after handling the Oklahoma State Cowboys
This is what the top 25 currently looks like, according to ESPN’s Football Power Index:
- Ohio State Buckeyes
- Indiana Hoosiers
- Oregon Ducks
- Alabama Crimson Tide
- Notre Dame Fighting Irish
- Georgia Bulldogs
- Texas Longhorns
- Texas A&M Aggies
- USC Trojans
- Miami Hurricanes
- Utah Utes
- Ole Miss Rebels
- Tennessee Volunteers
- Texas Tech Red Raiders
- Michigan Wolverines
- BYU Cougars
- Vanderbilt Commodores
- Oklahoma Sooners
- Missouri Tigers
- Iowa Hawkeyes
- Penn State Nittany Lions
- LSU Tigers
- Washington Huskies
- Auburn Tigers
- Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
The Red Raiders aren’t in a bad spot right now, but it feels like Texas Tech probably should be ranked a little bit higher. This weekend with the upcoming game against the Kansas State Wildcats will present the Red Raiders with an opportunity to get a decent win over a team that is improving steadily throughout the season.
But while Texas Tech fans might have minor gripes about a ranking spot or two, I think there are going to be plenty of folks who look at where the Aggies are ranked and have an issue or two with who is in front of them. And as a neutral party, it’s going to be fun to see how that rivalry plays out this season.
