Texas Tech isn’t at the top of the Big 12 anymore. After losing on the road (in very infuriating fashion, by the way), the Red Raiders are dropping a bit in the Big 12 standings. And unfortunately for the Texas Tech football team, the Red Raiders are finding themselves in a three-way tie for third place in the latest Big 12 standings right alongside Arizona State and the Houston Cougars.

As for who is ahead of the Red Raiders right now?

Well, we’ve got the BYU Cougars (who a lot of folks expected to be a true Big 12 contender this season) and the Cincinnati Bearcats (a team that has seemingly come out of nowhere to create headaches for folks across the conference this season).

Big 12 football standings, week 8: Texas Tech tied for third after losing on the road against Arizona State

With that Texas Tech loss to Arizona State, here’s what the Big 12 football standings look like right now:

  • BYU Cougars - 7-0 overall, 4-0 Big 12
  • Cincinnati Bearcats - 6-1 overall, 4-0 Big 12
  • Arizona State Sun Devils - 5-2 overall, 3-1 Big 12
  • Texas Tech Red Raiders - 6-1 overall, 3-1 Big 12
  • Houston Cougars - 6-1 overall, 3-1 Big 12
  • Iowa State Cyclones - 5-2 overall, 2-2 Big 12
  • TCU Horned Frogs - 5-2 overall, 2-2 Big 12
  • Utah Utes - 5-2 overall, 2-2 Big 12
  • Baylor Bears - 4-3 overall, 2-2 Big 12
  • Kansas Jayhawks - 4-3 overall, 2-2 Big 12
  • Kansas State Wildcats - 3-4 overall, 2-2 Big 12
  • Arizona Wildcats - 4-3 overall, 1-3 Big 12
  • UCF Knights - 4-3 overall, 1-3 Big 12
  • Colorado Buffaloes - 3-4 overall, 1-3 Big 12
  • West Virginia Mountaineers - 2-5 overall, 0-4 Big 12
  • Oklahoma State Cowboys - 1-6 overall, 0-4 Big 12

That’s not at all the spot that Texas Tech wants to find itself in. Technically, the Red Raiders don’t have complete and total control of their destiny at this point, but it is pretty close. The Red Raiders will have a shot at BYU when the Cougars come to Lubbock in a few weeks and BYU will play against Cincinnati in late November.

Oh, and it’s worth noting that Houston and Arizona State will play each other this coming weekend.

So, if Texas Tech can keep winning and a few teams around the Red Raiders can stumble a bit here and there, then there’s still a great chance that Texas Tech will end up being just fine when it comes to getting into the Big 12 championship game.
