Well, things aren’t going all that well for Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech football team as the Red Raiders face off against the Arizona State Sun Devils. The defense is doing its job and is absolutely holding up against an Arizona State offense that has the potential to put a few points on the board here and there.
But the offense? Well, uh, the offense is struggling so far.
Notably, redshirt freshman quarterback Will Hammond isn’t exactly thriving right now. He’s completed 67 percent of his passes and did connect for a nice, 30-yard touchdown strike through the air, but prior to that, he’d only completed 7-of-11 passes for 50 yards.
And on the ground, the guy who is averaging 9.6 yards per carry has just five yards on the ground on six carries.
That’s concerning. And Texas Tech fans are also a little alarmed by this sort of start.
Texas Tech fans seem concerned by the offensive start from the Red Raiders vs. Arizona State
Here’s what Texas Tech fans have had to say about the way the Red Raiders are playing on offense against the Arizona State Sun Devils:
I take back my Will Hammond is better than Behren Morton take, dreadful offensive start for Texas Tech

Need a public apology for anyone who said Will Hammond should start over Behren Morton
— DIEGS (@TexasDiegs) October 18, 2025
Maybe the Hammond people will be a little more quiet now.

Some folks are asking for the Behren Morton disrespect to come to an end (and with the way the Red Raiders are playing on offense right now, it’s certainly more than fair for them to bring that up).
Why does Will Hammond have more designed runs than both RBs combined after 3 drives?

We’re in trouble
I love Will Hammond, but he does not need to be the focal point of this offense today.

Let Williams and Dickey cook and Hammond will find his spots naturally.
I’m tired of watching Will Hammond run the football. This offense is capable of so much more
— Richard Gonzales (@RichardLee_02) October 18, 2025
Some other Texas Tech fans just want to see an adjustment in the playcalling until the Red Raiders get things smoothed out and Hammond is able to find his groove.
Now, all that said, the Red Raiders were able to finally break through and get into the end zone. And it’s all because of a fantastic throw from the young quarterback.
What a throw by Will Hammond. Texas Tech finally gets on the board at Arizona State.

The Red Raiders currently have a 7-6 lead over Arizona State in a game that the Sun Devils just haven’t looked all that sharp really anywhere. Texas Tech absolutely needs to find a way to build on this momentum from that 30-yard touchdown strike and build on this lead on the road against the defending Big 12 champs.
