Folks, it’s probably fair to say that the Texas Tech football program is becoming more and more of a national brand. Or at least there’s potential for that. As Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders continue to have all sorts of success, they’re continuing to build an expanded recruiting footprint.

And that’s evidenced as McGuire and his Texas Tech football team have managed to pick up a commitment from 5-star edge Anthony Sweeney from Baltimore, Maryland.

For a Texas Tech team that has historically been left on the outside looking in when it comes to high profile recruiting, it’s a huge deal for the Red Raiders to get a player like Sweeney.

Sweeney is the seventh recruit to commit to the Texas Tech Red Raiders for the 2027 recruiting cycle and this group now sits at No. 9 nationally and No. 1 in the Big 12, according to the 247Sports rankings.

This is fantastic territory for the Red Raiders to be in, by the way.

Here’s how Texas Tech fans are reacting to the Red Raiders’ latest 5-star commitment thanks to Anthony Sweeney

And unsurprisingly, this has Texas Tech fans thrilled about where the program stands right now.

And they should be thrilled about how things are going. This sort of recruiting momentum is coming right after a fantastic and historic 2025 Texas Tech football season where the Red Raiders managed to get a dozen wins (including in the Big 12 championship game) and make it into the College Football Playoff.

So yeah, this is huge. For Joey McGuire to continue recruiting in this way, it looks like that won’t just be a one special year sort of situation. The Red Raiders are aiming for sustained success.

The Red Raiders are positioned well to continue to build this season. And Texas Tech fans have every right to be happy about this current era of college athletics.
