Texas Tech fans are more than upset with Red Raiders' performance in Corvallis

The Texas Tech football team hasn't exactly inspired confidence in the fan base through two games. So it is no shock to see Red Raiders take to social media to express their concerns. After all, X has replaced the local coffee shop as the place where people go to cuss and discuss the latest developments from their favorite team.

The less-than-inspiring showing against Abilene Christian could be explained away. Fans were able to tell themselves that Tech didn't take the FCS opponent seriously, deployed a vanilla game plan, and had some rust to knock off as reasons the Red Raiders didn't come close to covering the spread against the Wildcats.

However, those excuses turned into real flaws in week two. Managing to only beat Oregon State by eleven points after being favored by over 25 and having to come from behind in the fourth quarter to do so sent off alarms throughout Raiderland.

Where was the supposed improvement from week one to week two? Where was the dominance at the line of scrimmage that we were told all offseason that we were going to see on both sides of the ball? Where was this vaunted running game featuring a three-headed monster at tailback?

Where was the edge and anger that this team was going to play with all year after being a national punching bag throughout the offseason? Where was the discipline and intelligence from a veteran roster?

In all honesty, Tech was not the better team on the field for the majority of Saturday night's contest. The Red Raiders were outgained by 120 yards, allowed a true freshman wide receiver to rack up 240 yards (30 yards per catch), and had more penalty yards than the Beavers.

In fact, were it not for a late fourth-quarter offensive pass interference penalty that some around the nation are questioning the validity of, Tech could have easily lost. In other words, the invincibility that many Red Raider fans felt coming into the season is gone.

It has been replaced by good old-fashioned Texas Tech cynicism and sarcasm, which does make for funny social media content. Here are a few of the top X posts Red Raiders put up during and immediately following Tech's narrow victory.

There is something to be said about the fact that Texas Tech fans are so upset after an 11-point road win, the first non-conference road win for the program since beating Houston in 2017. That's a sign that the bar has been raised around West Texas.

However, until the new standard is met, fans are going to continue to be unsatisfied. Such is the new reality for a program that might still be experiencing growing pains. After all, it is one thing to get good and a completely different thing to be consistently excellent. Hopefully, the Red Raiders can start to figure the second part of that riddle out soon. Until they do, fans will continue to be cynical.
