The Fourth of July is a pretty big deal. Independence Day is a noteworthy event that Americans celebrate. But, folks in Lubbock, Texas (and those elsewhere who happen to be affiliated with Texas Tech) happened to have a few extra reasons to be ecstatic on Friday as Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders got a 5-star commitment.

Felix Ojo, a truly talented and highly rated offensive tackle in the 2026 recruiting cycle, made the decision to commit to play for the Red Raiders.

And that should feel like a huge deal. Ojo is currently ranked as the No. 5 player in the 2026 class, according to 247 Sports. Along with that, he’s ranked as the No. 1 offensive tackle and the second best player in the state of Texas.

So yeah, there’s plenty to celebrate there. Red Raider fans should be thrilled. Largely because he’s currently slated to play in Lubbock instead of somewhere else.

The 6-6, 275 pound offensive tackle from Mansfield, Texas picked the Red Raiders over the likes of the Texas Longhorns, Michigan Wolverines, Ohio State Buckeyes, Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers, Georgia Bulldogs, Florida State Seminoles, LSU Tigers, Ole Miss Rebels, Colorado Buffaloes, and a number of other teams that offered him a spot on their roster.

Texas Tech fans celebrate 5-star OT Felix Ojo’s recent commitment to play for Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders

Here’s how Texas Tech fans are reacting after Ojo committed to play for Texas Tech.

Getting Ojo to Lubbock will be huge for McGuire and this recruiting class. We’re talking about one of the most talented players in the history of Texas Tech recruiting. Ever. Ojo has a ton of potential that could have a huge impact on this team as McGuire continues to build it.

The Red Raiders sure do seem serious about recruiting at a very high level this year. That should pay off for Texas Tech moving forward.

This sort of recruiting momentum is exciting to see and the Red Raiders seem to be in a position to keep that success rolling. They currently have the best recruiting class in the Big 12 and if they keep recruiting at this level, then they could continue to climb the national recruiting rankings as well.
