Saturday afternoon, as the Texas Tech Red Raiders welcomed the Oklahoma State Cowboys to Lubbock, the Texas Tech football program also welcomed one of the greatest to ever play for them back to town. And in addition to the warm welcome that Graham Harrell received from the Red Raider fans, Texas Tech also honored him by inducting the legendary quarterback into the Texas Tech Ring of Honor.

There aren’t many players to get that sort of recognition. Prior to today, just 11 Texas Tech football players have been placed in the Ring of Honor. And now, one of the most prolific passers that college football has ever seen has made his way into that select group.

At halftime of Saturday’s matchup between the Red Raiders and the Cowboys, Texas Tech honored Harrell.

Texas Tech fans thrilled to see legendary quarterback Graham Harrell receive Ring of Honor recognition from the Red Raiders

And of course, Texas Tech fans certainly loved giving Harrell a bit of praise as he entered the Ring of Honor for the Red Raider football program.

Some TTU fans wanted to see Harrell get a chance to play for the Red Raiders once more. With the way the Texas Tech quarterbacks have struggled at times throughout the season (especially as of late with Behren Morton injured and Will Hammond playing inconsistently), I can’t really blame them.

It’s great to see one of the greatest quarterbacks college football has ever seen get the recognition he has certainly earned.

Harrell is one of the most iconic quarterbacks from the Mike Leach era of Texas Tech football. During his college career in Lubbock, Harrell completed 1403 of his 2011 pass attempts (good for 69.8 percent) for 15,793 yards and 134 touchdowns while throwing just 34 interceptions. He truly was one of the most impressive quarterbacks anyone had every seen, esspecially at that time.
