There’s a good chance that the Texas Tech Red Raider offense will look a little different this afternoon. As Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech football team get set to face off against the defending Big 12 champs, the Red Raiders will be turning to Will Hammond to start at quarterback this afternoon.
This matchup with the Arizona State Sun Devils is sure going to be interesting.
Texas Tech fans have been fascinated by the potential that Hammond has and he’s an incredibly dynamic athlete.
On top of that, while he hasn’t always been a great passer in every single outing he’s been in, it seems like he is capable of really impressive throws. Just check out the Texas Tech road game against Utah, where he completed 81.3 percent of his passes for 169 yards and two scores in less than one half of a game.
So with the report that the Red Raiders are turning the offense over to Hammond for today’s game, here’s how Texas Tech fans are reacting.
Texas Tech fans weigh in as the Red Raiders are reportedly turning to Will Hammond at quarterback vs. Arizona State
No. 7 Texas Tech is currently expected to start backup Will Hammond at QB tomorrow vs. Arizona State, sources tell me and @chris_hummer for @CBSSports.

Starting QB Behren Morton didn’t practice all week due to an injury. Hammond was a Class of 2024 four-star recruit. pic.twitter.com/j8t1eb2DER
It is worth noting that Texas Tech’s quarterback situation for the better part of the past decade has been a bit odd, to say the least.

With all of the talent surrounding Hammond, this shouldn’t be too big of a deal for the Red Raiders, especially with the fact that Mack Leftwich has been able to prep all week for this.
It’s not too difficult to hand the ball off to Dickey…

And there is just generally an overarching sense of confidence from Texas Tech fans right now.
This is what Will Hammond did in a half against Utah on the road. I’m not worried about Will https://t.co/SbhKbjOx2t pic.twitter.com/NRCFZunGkk

Oh, yeah, expect the Red Raiders to run the heck out of the ball in this game. Hammond is averaging 9.6 yards per carry and the Texas Tech rushing attack is also just generally good.
Are we going to run for over 300 yards again? https://t.co/xwTXBc0T9H

Behren Morton on field: 5.3
Will Hammond on field: 7.5
Perhaps Hammond (for now) is a slight step back in the passing game, but his athleticism gives the Red Raiders more diversity on the ground https://t.co/vu4nHhwQ4X
It’s going to be fun to see how Texas Tech offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich adjusts things with this offense as the Red Raiders face off against the Sun Devils this afternoon. It’s also going to be interesting to see what Texas Tech does at quarterback long-term if Hammond has a solid day today.
