Texas Tech football battling to flip commit away from Big Ten program

Texas Tech is on the trail of a big fish from out of state, but to land him, the Red Raiders will have to flip him away from a high-profile Big Ten program.

When the Texas Tech football program hits the recruiting trail, especially in the high school ranks, most of the roads the Red Raiders travel are in Texas. However, the program is expanding its search for top-tier talent, and that includes taking a shot at landing a coveted California prospect.

This week, Adam Gorney of Rivals and Yahoo reported that Tech has extended an offer to 2027 defensive back Khalil Terry. Rivals rates the native of Tustin, California (near Anaheim) as a 4-star recruit. That site lists him as the No. 171 overall player and No. 14 safety in the class of 2027.

However, if Tech is going to bring Terry to Lubbock, it will mean that he will have to flip his commitment away from Michigan State. In fact, Terry has been verbally committed to the Spartans since December of last year.

On the other hand, that is a very early date for a player in the class of 2027 to give his pledge to a college. In fact, that makes it seem as if he jumped on one of the first offers he received. That's why many think that he could be a candidate to change his mind now that a flood of new offers has come in.

In addition to Texas Tech and Michigan State, Terry has offers from such schools as Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Louisville, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Tennessee, USC, UCLA, Utah, and Washington, among others.

Rivals also shows that Terry has visited Ohio State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, and UCLA in recent weeks. Thus, it is easy to see how tough this recruiting battle will be for the Red Raiders.

While it is rather unusual for a California product to sign with the Texas Tech football program, the Red Raiders are trying to bring in some talent from the Golden State. In fact, according to the 247Sports.com list of 2027 offers, Texas Tech has already targeted nine California high school prospects.

It will be interesting to see if that strategy pays off in the form of actual recruiting wins for head coach Joey McGuire and his program. However, it is already a sign that the Red Raiders are searching far and wide for talent, and Terry is a player they are clearly very high on. Of course, so is the rest of the nation as well.
