Sure, the focus of just about every Texas Tech fan today is on the basketball team's first-round NCAA Tournament game against UNC Wilmington. However, that game doesn't tip until after 9 p.m. Central, giving us some time to squeeze in some Texas Tech football recruiting news.

It is being reported by Mike Roach of 247Sports.com that the Red Raiders are in the top seven schools for one of the best high school wide receivers in Texas, Zion Robinson. This could be an important recruiting battle because there are a number of Big 12 schools still in the mix.

Also in Robinson's top seven are TCU, Baylor, and Arizona along with Stanford and Miami out of the ACC and Illinois out of the Big Ten.

According to the 247Sports composite rankings, Robinson is a 4-star prospect. He's ranked the No. 121 player in the country regardless of position and the No. 17 wide receiver in the class of 2026. What's more, he's the No. 17 overall player in Texas.

In addition to his top seven schools, the 6-foot-4, 180-pounder holds offers from Colorado, Florida, Arkansas, Kansas State, Kanas, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Oregon, Texas, and a host of others.

As you might expect with a player of this size and ranking, Robinson is a multi-sport athlete at the high school level. 247Sports shows that, in addition to playing basketball, he won the Texas 6A high jump crown as a sophomore while also running on his team's 4X100 relay, which also qualified for state.

Multi-sport athletes have long been coveted by Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire and his coaching staff. They believe that players who train in multiple sports are more explosive and well-rounded on the football field and Robinson appears to fit that mold.

On the gridiron, Robinson caught 34 passes for 485 yards and 8 TDs in 10 games in 2024. That came after he hauled in 25 passes for 409 yards and 6 TDs in 2023 as a sophomore.

Of course, Tech needs to add more talent at the wide receiver position in the current recruiting class. This fall, starting wide receiver Caleb Douglas, the team's top returning receiver from last season, will exhaust his eligibility. What's more, new transfer wide receiver, Reggie Virgil, who is also expected to be a starter this fall, has only one season left to play as well.

On the other hand, the Red Raiders have done a great job of adding talented young receivers to the mix in recent recruiting classes. In the 2024 recruiting haul, Tech added Tyson Turner to the team and he's impressed in his short time on campus even appearing in a handful of games as a true freshman last season.

Then, in the class of 2025, Tech added 4-star wideout Tristan Gentry along with 3-star receivers Leyton Stone, Michal Dever, and Bryson Jones. However, none of the players Tech has in the mix currently are as highly-rated as Robinson is. Therefore, this is a recruiting battle that Texas Tech fans should keep a close eye on.
